October 15 Migrating Site Collection to new Content DatabaseAt some point in time you will be faced with having to migrate a site collection out from one Content Database and into another. This is actually quite an easy thing to do if you plan for it. In the event that you suspect a Site Collection may need to migrate out to its own content database you can just configure this up front. You see if you only have a single Content Database assigned to your Web Application SharePoint will put all site collections into that single DB. If you add a second content database SharePoint will add any new site collections to the database with the greatest difference between the current number of sites and the maximum number of sites. This is useful if you plan this from the start but what if you already have a site collection that needs to migrate to its own content database?
In order to do that you would need to simply add a new content database, back up the site collection that you would like to migrate to the new database, delete the site collection, then restore it from backup. Do all of this with stsadm.exe. This will automatically place the site collection into the new content database.
